Venue
Crete stands at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa. Evidence of its rich history, mythology and culture is reflected in its many well-preserved structures from earlier civilizations including Minoan, Greco-Roman, Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman periods. Rethymnon, a city of about 20,000 inhabitants, is located on the northern coast of Crete, between Chania and Heraklion. Its rich history dates back to the prehistoric period (1350-1250 B.C.) when the name of the town was Rithimna.
The temperature
in the summer months averages 28°C making it ideal
for swimming and other water sports at its many sandy beaches, as well as
hiking and exploring of its varied terrain of mountains and gorges.
The University of
Crete, with campuses in both Rethymnon and Heraklion, was established in 1973 and started functioning in the academic
year 1977-78. The seat of the University is in Rethymnon. The University has
about 6000 undergraduate students and 700 postgraduate students, more than 400
Faculty members and researchers, and about 240 administrative staff.
The School of
Philosophy, the School of Social Sciences, and the School of Education are
located in Rethymnon, while the School of Sciences and the School of Health
Sciences, as well as the University Hospital, are located in Heraklion.
The
Department of Economics is one of the newest economics departments in Greece,
having begun operation in 1987. The department gives high priority to research
and the creation of international links.
The
city of Rethymnon can be reached via either plane or ship. Air travel is routed
through the airports in the cities of Chania (60 km) or Heraklion (80 km).
Direct flights to these airports are available from some European cities. Ship
travel is by ferryboat from Athens (the port of Piraeus). Further information
about how to reach Rethymnon can be found on the conference website.
Conference
participants who wish to do so can book air travel, ship travel from Athens,
additional excursions, car rentals or other related travel services through the
conference travel agent at e-mail address creta-connection@ret.forthnet.gr or
fax +30 831 25663.
