date_______________ Departure date_______________ __ Single room __ Double room No. of nights _____
__ I do not require hotel accommodation.
Please note that hotel accommodation
in Crete in the summer is in very high demand. For this reason, the hotels
being used for the conference may be unable to guarantee room availability
after March 15. Requests for extra nights of hotel accommodation should be made
at the time of registration, and will be satisfied as far as possible. Note
that rates at some hotels will increase by 10-20% after the night of July 1, due to the shift to hotel peak season.
Note also that participants who request a single room, but are ultimately
booked into a double room (because of the limited number of single rooms
available), may have to pay an additional amount per night. Payment can be
refunded in full (except for bank costs) if hotel reservation is cancelled
before April 1. Any cancellations or changes in hotel reservations should be
sent by e-mail to creta-connection@ret.forthnet.gr or fax +30 831 25663.
In addition to the Social Programme
which is included in the registration fee, optional excursions are available
for accompanying persons on the first day of the conference (Friday) and for
all participants, immediately following the conference (Sunday afternoon,
Monday). These excursions will take place if they are requested by a minimum of
35 persons. Please see the “Detailed Information on Optional Excursions” sheet
for details.

The following optional excursions will be offered, if requested by a minimum of 35 people.
Departure in the morning from the hotel to the southern coast of Crete.
First stop at Gortys, one of the most important Minoan cities, and later
capital of the Roman province of Crete and Cyrenaica. The most distinctive
monuments are the Praetorium (2nd century A.D.), residence of the Roman
governor of the province and the Nymphaion (2nd century A.D.), where the Nymphs
were worshipped; the temple of Pythian Apollo; the sanctuary of the Egyptian
divinities; and the Odeon, where the famous inscription with the laws of Gortyn
was found. Plato spoke with admiration of these laws, which were written in a
Doric dialect and date from the 6th century B.C. Second stop at Phaestos, the
second most important palace-city of Minoan Crete (after Knossos). The
residence of the mythical Radamanthes, the palace was also the nucleus of a
settlement inhabited since the Neolithic age. The layout of the palace is
similar to that of Knossos, but on a smaller scale. The famous disk of
Phaestos, with its hieroglyphic inscriptions, is probably the most significant
find. Third stop in the village of Matala,
famous since the 1970s for its unusual caves. There will be time here
for lunch and a swim in the Libyan Sea. On the return trip, a final stop in the
village of Spili, famous for its Venetian lion fountains. Afternoon arrival
back at the hotel. Price of the excursion includes transportation and tour
guide. Entrance fees of approximately 2.000 drachmas and the cost of lunch are
not included.
Afternoon departure (around 16:00) from hotel with the first stop at the
historically important monastery of Arkadi, built in the 16th
century in a beautiful natural setting. It is linked with significant events in
Crete’s struggle against Turkish domination. The second stop is in the colorful
village of Margarites with its traditional ceramic pottery workshops. On the
return trip, the final stop is at the recently excavated site at Eleftherna,
which has uncovered important monuments from a Greco-Roman city. Arrival back
at the hotel around 20:00. Price of the excursion includes transportation and
tour guide. Entrance fee of approximately 500 drachmas not included.
Morning departure from the hotel along the northern coast to Knossos,
the most important palace-city of Minoan Crete. Inhabited since the Neolithic
era. The first palace of Knossos was built around 1900 B.C. The ruins include
the palace of King Minos, the homes of the officials and priests who surrounded
him (Little Palace, Caravanserai, House of the Frescoes, etc.), the homes of
ordinary people and the cemetery. This multistoried construction covered an
area of 22.000 sq. m. and, in addition to the royal quarters, also contained
places of worship, treasuries, workshops and storerooms. Second stop at the
Archaeological Museum in Heraklion, one of the most important museums in
Greece. On exhibit here are extensive
finds from the Minoan era. Pottery, stone carvings, sealstones, statuettes,
gold, metalwork, the marvelous frescoes from the Royal and Little Palaces and
villas of the wealthy, and finally, the unique painted limestone sarcophagus
from the Agia Trias. Following the museum, free time for lunch and shopping in
the city of Heraklion, with afternoon return to the hotel. Price of excursion
includes transportation and tour guide. Entrance fees of approximately 3.000
drachmas and the cost of lunch are not included.
Departure
at 6:30 from the hotel along the northern cost to Chania , then to the heart of
the White Mountains to the Omalos Plateau for breakfast, and then entrance to
the Samaria Gorge, the longest gorge in Europe (about18 kilometres) and
well-known for its awesome beauty. The gorge is cut by a stream and at some
points the passage is just 3 meters wide and at times the steep sides rise to a
height of 600 meters. Hikers exit the gorge at the Libyan Sea where there is
time for a swim and/or meal at Agia Roumeli. Departure is by ferry-boat from
Agia Roumeli to Chora Sfakion and then bus to Rethymnon with arrival about
20:00. Note: Anyone taking this
excursion must be in good physical condition and with no serious health
problems. Sturdy hiking shoes or boots are a must as well as a hat for sun
protection. Price of excursion includes round trip bus transportation, and a
tour guide. Entrance fee and boat fare (approximately 2.700 drachmas) and meals
not included.
