TRANSPORTATION TO RETHYMNO
There are several ways to
reach Rethymno:
1) By air
travel to Athens, and a connecting flight to the Cretan cities of either Chania or
Heraklion, and then bus or taxi travel to Rethymno (approximately 1 hour)
2) By air
travel from a European city directly to the Cretan cities of either Chania or Heraklion,
and then bus or taxi travel to Rethymno (approximately 1 hour)
3) By air
travel to Athens, and ferryboat from Athens (the port of Piraeus) to Rethymno

Air travel between Athens
and Crete
Travelers can reach Rethymno by air travel from Athens via Chania
or Heraklion. Flights between Athens and either of these cities take slightly less than
one hour.
Several domestic airlines serve the Athens-Chania-Athens and
Athens-Heraklion-Athens routes. The airlines include: Air Greece (JG), Olympic Airlines
(OA), and Cronus (X5). An approximate timetable of flights is provided below, however
these flights must be confirmed with a travel agent as they are subject to change.

and other European cities
Direct flights are available between Chania or Heraklion and
some European cities. Check details with a travel agent for the most current information.
Land travel between Chania
airport and Rethymno
Chania – Rethymno
Option 1
Airport transfers from either airport (Chania or Heraklion) directly to any of the hotels in Rethymno can be arranged, for those who wish, by the Creta Connection Travel Agency. Transfer by taxi costs between 15.000 and 17.000 drachmas. However, this cost can be divided if more than one passenger shares the taxi. (Two passengers would pay about 8.000 drachmas each; three passengers about 5.500 drachmas each, and 4 passengers about 4.000 drachmas each). Also, if a large number of conference participants arrive at the same time (at least 25), the Creta Connection could arrange for a special bus, in which case the cost could fall slightly below 4.000 drachmas per person.
If you are interested, the Creta Connection could
coordinate your transfer to minimize cost. Also, they would arrange for you
would be met at the airport and taken directly to the taxis (which are sometimes
in short supply during busy summer periods). If you are interested in making

Option 2
After arriving at the Chania airport, travelers can take a
taxi to the bus terminal (KTEL) in the city of Chania, and from there buses leave for the
Rethymno bus terminal approximately every hour between 5:00 and 20:00.
Option 3
Certain flights of Olympic Airways have a connecting bus from
the Chania airport to the center of the city of Rethymno.
Option 4
At Chania Airport you can also find TAXIS (blue or gray) which
can drive you directly to your hotels in Rethymno for a price of approximately 15,000
Greek drachmas. It is possible for a group of 3 or 4 persons to hire a TAXI and share the
expenses.
Land travel between
Heraklion airport and Rethymno
Heraklion – Rethymno
Option 1

Option 2
After arriving at the Heraklion airport, travelers can take a
taxi to the bus terminal (KTEL) in the city of Heraklion, and from there buses leave for
the Rethymno bus terminal approximately every hour between 05:00. and 20:00.
Option 3
At
Heraklion airport you can also find TAXIS (blue or gray) which can drive you directly to
your hotels in Rethymno for a price of approximately 18,000 Greek drachmas. It is possible
for a group of 3 or 4 persons to hire a TAXI and share the expenses.
Ship travel between Athens
and Crete
There is ferryboat service direct between Rethymno and
Piraeus, the seaport of Athens. The Rethimniaki Company has daily ferryboat service on
ferries which accommodate cars on the overnight trip. Daily ferries depart at 19:30 from
the port of Piraeus and arrive in Rethymno at 7:00 the following morning. For details
contact Rethimniaki Ferries +301-4137350 or +301-4116211. After arriving at the port of Rethymno travelers can take a taxi to the hotel.
On the return trip from Rethymno to Athens, the ferryboat again departs at 19:30 and
arrives the following morning at 7:00 a.m.
Ferryboat connection between Athens and Crete is also
available through Chania, Souda Bay (ANEK lines) or
Heraklion (MINOAN lines). After arrival at the port of
Souda (Chania) or Heraklion, travelers would choose between the bus/taxi options listed
above.
