Rethymno Prefecture

Rethymno is one of the four prefectures of Crete. The other three are the prefecture of Chania (west of Rethymno), Heraklion (to the east) and Lasithi (east of Heraklion). The city of Rethymno is the capital of the prefecture with 32,468 inhabitants according to the 2011 Census. It is located on the north coast of Crete. It is the administrative, commercial and transportation center of the prefecture.

The city of Rethymno is a popular tourist destination. It is picturesque city located in a scenic and diverse landscape. The old town of Rethymno was built during the Venetian period, with changes brought about by the Turkish conquest and the continuous habitation to this day. The city has maintained its rich cultural heritage and traditions.
