Welcome Note by the Dean

Dear visitor,

Welcome to the website of the School of Social Sciences of the University of Crete and to the four disciplines that compose its faculty: Sociology, Economics, Political Science, and Psychology.

The School was founded in 1984 and accepted its first undergraduate students during the 1987-1988 academic year. It has grown to become one of the leading social science schools in Greece. The School is known internationally for its strong research focus and for producing undergraduate and postgraduate students with the analytical and critical-thinking skills required in today’s complex employment world.

Staff members are accomplished and dedicated academics in their respective disciplines, have considerable research expertise and have extensive international links. The teaching-learning process is valued, and instructors bring enthusiasm to their classrooms.  These factors ensure that the latest ideas and insights of the disciplines are immediately available to students, providing a creative dynamic environment for interaction and learning.  Moreover, each semester interdisciplinary courses are offered to all of the students that comprise the student body.

The School has a strong research focus. It has close working links to the University of Crete Research Center, an autonomous research unit offering students and faculty opportunities for interdisciplinary research and international collaborations. There are also fifteen Laboratory units focusing on diverse subject matter where both undergraduate and graduate students acquire research skills.

With over 90 academic staff, 6213 undergraduate students, 229 graduate students and 111 doctoral degree students, the School provides an atmosphere of encouragement and support, empowering students and faculty to engage in research activity and intellectual growth.

Welcome to our community.
